Legendary East hit by investor woes

BEIJING Legendary Pictures' plans for Hollywood-China movie production venture Legendary East suffered a setback yesterday after a key investor, Hong Kong's Paul Y. Engineering Group (PYE), put its $220.5 million investment on hold because of shaky financial markets. Deal was one of the biggest of a raft of agreements between Hollywood shingles and Chinese players aimed at getting into the booming Chinese market. PYE said in a statement that although the stock placing had received a positive response, it was not enough to complete the placing before the year-end deadline and the company decided to put the placing on hold. "However, we maintain that diversification with an investment in Legendary East is beneficial to PYE. We intend to work out an improved structure with the goal of re-launching the transactions," PYE chairman James Chiu said. PYE is publicly traded on the Hong Kong stock market and attempted to raise the Legendary East funds by placing new company stock with private equity firm AID Partners, and through UBS AG, to other institutional and professional investors. PYE said it would try again in 2012 by working with the partners to modify the structure of the deal. Under the original proposal, PYE planned to take a 50% stake in Legendary East. Thomas Tull's Legendary Entertainment would have been left with a 40% stake in Legendary East and China's Huayi Brothers would have the remaining 10%. In June, Tull paired up with Chinese-born Hong Kong media and finance entrepreneur Kelvin Wu to launch Legendary East. The goal had been to make one or two big-budget movies a year starting in 2013 that were aimed at global auds but also commercially viable in China. The movies were to be mainly in English and feature themes based on Chinese history, mythology or culture. Wu, formerly of Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment, serves as Legendary East's CEO and is a principal at private equity firm AID Partners, which entered into a "subscription agreement" to invest $35 million in PYE to become a significant shareholder in the company. PYE is best known for its property management biz in Hong Kong's booming real estate market and for engineering work that has helped shape the city's ever-changing skyline. One of PYE's towers, the Center, which is Hong Kong's fifth tallest skyscraper, was used as a location in "The Dark Knight," which Legendary co-financed with Warner Bros. Legendary East was to enable Tull to bypass Chinese government restrictions that put a 20-pic limit on foreign films that can play in the country's theaters, and allow him to benefit from the growing box office in the region. Chinese B.O. surged 64% to $1.5 billion in 2010 and is expected to grow 30% in 2011 to $2 billion. Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Don't Cry For Albert Brooks, Says Best Awards E-Mail Ever

It’s the little things that get us through one otherwise interminable awards season after another: Oscar-nominee trading cards, #ConsiderUggie, The Daldry… That kind of stuff. But perhaps the most remarkable development of the current awards cycle sprung immediately, kind of miraculously from the previous most remarkable development of the current awards cycle. And it all benefits Drive scene-stealer (and recent SAG Award snubbee) Albert Brooks. Like a cool, calm yet furious avenger sauntering into a room full of showgirls with a hammer in one hand and a bullet in the other, a rep for Drive casually sent along the following dispatch this morning. I share it in its entirety not only for context’s sake, but as a brass-balled example of the best that awards publicity has to offer — transcending unmistakably bad news by saying, in a nutshell: “Yes, we know Mr. Brooks was snubbed. No, we’re not worried. Here’s why. You can’t stop what’s coming. Especially you, Christopher Plummer.” Whatever this guy is paid, it’s not enough: Good Afternoon Friends, We appreciate all of your continued support of DRIVE and coverage of the film, especially following this morning’s SAG noms. Thank you for all of your shout-outs to Albert Brooks on Twitter and in your analyses of the SAG nominations in regards to his not being recognized today, but we remain confident that the Supporting Actor race still boils down to a two-man showdown between Albert and Christopher Plummer. If you will recall, Marcia Gay Harden was not nominated for the SAG in 2000 after her win for Best Supporting Actress at the NYFCC, and went on to win the Oscar for her critically-lauded performance. Albert Brooks has been the critical favorite and consensus pick for Best Supporting Actor so far in 2011 for DRIVE, so let’s take today in stride, especially following the onslaught of his multiple critics wins for Best Supporting Actor this week. Brooks has scored wins and nominations everywhere from the NY Film Critics Circle to Las Vegas to San Diego to Boston, yet inexplicably missed out at SAG. We expect that tomorrow the Hollywood Foreign Press will show Albert some love and that eventually the Academy voters will follow the lead of critics across the country and nominate Albert as Best Supporting Actor. For a little more perspective on the SAG race, please note the list below of the 19 men nominated in the Best Supporting Actor category since the awards’ inception in 1994 who have NOT gone on to be nominated for the Oscar: Kevin Bacon - Murder in the First (95) Don Cheadle - Devil in a Blue Dress (95) Hank Azaria - Birdcage (96) Nathan Lane - Birdcage (96) Billy Connolly - Mrs. Brown (97) Ned Kelly - Waking Ned Devine (98) Chris Cooper - American Beauty (99) Gary Oldman - Contender (00) Hayden Christiansen - Life as a House (01) Alfred Molina - Frida (02) Dennis Quaid - Far from Heaven (02) Chris Cooper - Seabiscuit (03) James Garner - Notebook (04) Freddie highmore - Finding Neverland (04) Don Cheadle - Crash (05) Leonardo DiCaprio - The Departed (06) Tommy Lee Jones - No Country for Old Men (07) Dev Patel - Slumdog Millionaire (08) Thank you all for your continued support of DRIVE and Albert Brooks! Swoon. No, really — thank you. EARLIER: SAG Award Nominations: Help Soars; Michael Fassbender, Albert Brooks Snubbed

American Horror Story: The Cast Solutions Halloween Night's Burning Questions

Connie Britton [WARNING: The next story consists of spoilers from Wednesday's episode of yankee Horror Story. Read at the own risk.] Is Ben going to get away from American Horror Story alive? Despite Hayden from the picture (approximately it appears) in the finish of Wednesday's episode, Ben's still in most types of trouble. He confessed to Vivien he scammed again - that's, after she caught him the very first time -- and it has been kicked in the house. He seemed to be visited through the ghost of Dr. Charles' angry wife, who desires him to guy-up and safeguard his (er, Rubber Man's) baby no matter what. Meanwhile, Ray the Burn Guy wants Ben to go out, provide him a 1000 dollars, or kill him, based on his mood. American Horror Story: What else went lower on Halloween evening? Evan Peters dishes But ignore Ben - how about everybody else? The lengthy Halloween evening might be over, however the disasters - and residual questions - remain. What's growing inside Vivien? Exactly what does Constance want? Why can't Tate learn about Adelaide's dying? (He's also totally dead, right?) Series stars Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott and Evan Peters do their finest to reply to: Ben and Vivien did not appear very worried, but just what did that nurse see growing inside Vivien that triggered her to faint? Britton and Peters both suspect it is something completely from hell. "I truly have no idea what she saw, but my suspicion is it was something with horns," Britton states. "I believe that's Vivien's fear." Peters also thinks a demon baby is probably. "I've not seen what's inside, and that i know this sounds cheesy, however i make a minidevil. Sharp tail, a trident fork, horns ... I simply picture it going swimming, smiling," he states. "But I am sure it's a lot more terrifying than that." Vivien finally gave Ben the boot - and using more than half the growing season to visit. Is the fact that split likely to stick? Well, Ben's additionally a work-at-home father, making the problem complicated. "We are certainly in crisis," McDermott states from the Harmons' marriage. "The truth is, I'm dealing with patients still in the home, so, you realize, I am attempting to save this marriage. The household is an essential factor in my experience, but it's clearly sliding through my fingers and that i can't appear to keep it together. So we are likely to see much more of that, me attempting to keep it together as it is all failing.Inch A United States Horror Story Halloween: 5 methods and goodies So Tate is Constance's (Jessica Lange) boy! We have learned she would like him to "improve,Inch but is the fact that all there's into it? That's her only curiosity about the Harmons? If Constance does want the Harmons to remain - and also the finish of Episode 2 certainly suggested just as much - there is not every other apparent motive, based on Peters. "There is no other ultimate purpose - a minimum of not that we understand of yet. I am confident she just wants him to obtain better," he states. Tate continues seeking Ben's help because "he wants his mother to like him, to provide him a few of the affection that he's always wanted." Talking about Tate, he's dead, right? We'll take that one: Based on the dead teen cheerleader, she'd actually cover 34 with babies at this time if Tate had not reached her first. Which makes Tate 34-ant, too, that also makes him dead. Question how he died for the reason that house ... Constance informs Purple that Tate can't realize that Adelaide (Jamie Maker) died. Presuming which will eventually happen, where are individuals two headed? "It'll worsen before it will get better," Peters teases. The actor and Lange lately needed to perform a scene he states neither were within the mood to complete. "It had been pretty difficult, pretty heavy ... but we went for this," he states. For what goes on to Tate if/when he discovers about his sister? "My hopes for this are he just goes absolutely bananas, kills his mother ... I would like it to switch changing which makes him add too much.Inch Ryan Murphy and Kaira Falcuk: The 6 stuff that inspired American Horror Story What's Larry's (Denis O'Hare) deal? First, he really wants to help Ben away from home, after which he wants a 1000 dollars, therefore we see him dousing the Harmons' family room in fuel, an action observed by late homeowner Chad (Zachary Quinto)... Ben and Vivien did not look as if they smelled gasoline when he moved the next morning either. Err ... For the time being, Ray remains an enigma, even going to the cast. States Peters: "After I read that, I had been like, 'Oh no, what exactly are they doing? What's he doing? A 1000 dollars? For which? Headshots?'" To whet your appetite, a couple of eerie images from next week's episode, "Piggy, Piggy." Who's behind Purple? Who's Dr. Charles after? What have you think about the Halloween two-parter? Surprised that Tate is definitely an honest-to-God homicidal wacko? Sad Addie will not be considered a ghost? Glad to determine Vivien give Ben the boot? Feeling a smidge of sympathy for crazy Hayden? Confused by crazy Ray? Wondering why Ben is not wondering who which means that lady in the basement was and why she cares a lot about Vivien's baby?

Dancing With the Stars: Nancy Grace Is "An Emotional Wreck"

Nancy Grace It's not easy risking personal humiliation on national television. Just ask Nancy Grace, the pit bull-like former prosecutor who is struggling to get into her Dancing With the Stars groove. "I was an emotional wreck this week, trying to dance," Grace said moments after her performance of the quick step. She was also still reeling from the low score (a 16) given to her first dance last week, for the cha cha. "I worked my fingers to the bone. We had practiced the cha cha so much, but then I didn't deliver on the dance floor."Grace is the first to admit that she has trouble accepting the concept of not excelling at something when she's working so hard and was very disturbed when she was in the bottom three on last Tuesday's results show. "You have to listen to what Tom [Bergeron] says," advises pro Karina Smirnoff. "Being in the bottom three doesn't necessarily mean that you got the least amount of votes."But that didn't stop Grace from having nightmares all week about ending up there again. "I know it was wrong," she said, "but as I was walking to the stage tonight, I remembered what it was like to be in jeopardy last week. It's very difficult to go out into the public eye and risk a personal failure. I've been worried all week." Which is why she had a meltdown in rehearsals with her understanding pro, Tristan McManus. "When you're practicing hours and hours every day, in one room, and things don't go well? I mean, sometimes, it explodes," says Grace. 'Wicked' flies with digital

'Wicked'As the lone West Finish survivor from the dozen tuners that opened up in 2006, "Wicked," honoring its fifth anniversary Sept. 27, looks to become chugging along as strongly since it's Broadway counterpart, which after eight years, shows no manifestation of slowing down. However in the U.K., where "The Wizard of Oz" is way a lesser cultural icon compared to the U.S., a lot of the London success from the Emerald City redux comes lower towards the West Finish production's groundbreaking utilization of on the internet and internet marketing.InchFor an extent, i was following Broadway's lead," states Jo Hutchison of selling company Jo Hutchison Intl., whose credits include "Mamma Mia," "Priscilla Full from the Desert" and which handled the London launch for marketing and advertising company Dewynters. "But at that time, convincing everybody that musical theater fans would contact one another online was certainly a constant struggle. Theater had not really done that before hugely. Digital marketing invest 'Wicked' was greater compared to every other musical."Ad dollars were moved from traditional avenues of major print and off-line locations, an internet-based the show even moved well past the expected forum of theater-specific websites. Evidence of its success has become highly visible on Facebook, in which the London production has around 40,000 fans who're constantly up-to-date using the show's every development on- and off-stage. Digital strategy appears to become working in the box office: Based on the show's London executive producer Michael McCabe -- who teamed with U.S. producers Marc Platt and David Stone around the Brit version -- the gathered gross in the 2,292-chair Apollo Victoria is "more than 145 million" ($228 million). Its only rival for that weekly top financial place is Disney's "The Lion King," that is inside a similarly large auditorium."Wicked" also boasts year-on-year growth using its 2010 total of $47.two million marking a tenPercent rise over 2009. This season is on target, McCabe adds, calculating more than $967,000 each week, up 7.5% in comparison to 2010.(In the event that weekly gross appears low in comparison to Gotham totals, it is because London ticket costs are considerably lower. The weekend top is $102 in comparison with Broadway's $130. Furthermore, London has far less premium seats, and they are listed at $145, which pales beside $276.25 in the Gershwin.)The London version is not sitting on its laurels: One more specialist company, Think Jam, was triggered board captured to deal with digital PR and promotions."Theaters tend to speak with their core audience using expected theater-ant conditions and websites," states Think Jam commercial director Philip Rose. "This is a closed group. We are widening that out, working online with video content on larger entertainment websites and beyond."Having a client list including twentieth century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros., the organization applied its handling of movie releases and rollouts -- exclusive positions of first-look packages on high-traffic sites, syndicating material to websites and blogs -- towards the similar needs of "Wicked."Although the organization utilizes a film-centric approach, Rose highlights one major difference. "Having a movie you've got a strictly defined period of time through pre-release to opening. For any lengthy-running theater show like 'Wicked,' the campaign is all about a constantly ongoing dialogue. The social networking activity surrounding it demonstrates it's not about basically plundering individuals excitement for that show, but about creating a relationship together.Inch Unlike plays, which only hardly ever expect audiences to come back for multiple viewings, tuners enjoy repeat business. Within the situation of "Wicked," that's increased with "Ozmopolitan," the show's monthly e-newsletter sent to the whole fanbase via direct email and social networking, which is related together. Additionally, there are major outreach work to family websites and "mummy blogs" and positioning programs using the educational industries to take advantage of the tuner's youth appeal.Happy though he's using the marketing, McCabe remains obvious-eyed about its potential."The different options are lots of money and get something for the short term but marketing alone does not turn shows around. We've been in a position to enhance a well known show. It is the reveal that counts. This is exactly why remained as here after 5 years.Inch Contact David Benedict at benedictdavid@mac.com

12 Burning TV Questions Clarified (Kind Of)

THR's chief TV critic weighs in at in at in round the turmoil in television -- large bets on pricey shows, systems fighting to right themselves and harmful new leads overpowering aging hits.our editor recommends18 Familiar Faces of Fall TVFall TV Dying Pool: Will 'Charlie's Angels,' 'Whitney' or 'How to become Gentleman' Be Axed First?Fall TV's 12 Most Anticipated ShowsFall TV Preview 2011: 10 Fresh Faces To KnowFall TV Preview 2011: The Completely New ShowsFall TV Preview 2011: The Returning Shows Will Terra Nova as well as the X Factor deliver for Fox? They're large, large shows. The wager here's that Terra Nova will underperform while not fail, while X Factor may even exceed what Fox is expecting. Clearly, once they both fail, you will notice high-level job openings by the bucket load. Will Ashton Kutcher save two and a half Males? Plenty of eyes will probably be on him. Clearly, nearly all people eyes seen the show to start with but nonetheless jeered, so that it's nothing beats standards are very high. The show's Sept. 19 premiere attracted nearly 28 million audiences. Will Foreign exchange's American Horror Story function as most-spoken-about fall series, and will it satisfy the hype? I believed Ryan Murphy and Kaira Falchuk's pilot will be a gigantic, assaultive mess, however eagerly await the next number of obligations to determine if they could fix the confusing madness. Here's an crazy guess: The premiere breaks Foreign exchange's ratings records, nevertheless the drop rate after that's precipitous. Will AMC wobble any longer? Season a few The Walking Dead will be the beginning point for people seeking clues. The guess here's that Walking Dead, despite focusing with limited funds, can do okay which is in good hands despite showrunner Glen Mazzara walking looking for the fired Frank Darabont. But Mad Males fans have a very extended delay until its return, the pilot for your new Western series Hell on Wheels (November. 6) isn't excellent, and fallout within the Killing's unfulfilling season finale will most likely linger. If Killing executive producer Veena Sud can't fix her plotting mistakes in season two, a larger viewer mutiny will probably be at hands -- and AMC will probably be left in stress mode. Will the faux Mad Males-inspired nostalgia in the Playboy Club and Pan Am mesmerize a mainstream audience? Guess: No. Nevertheless the overt sexism, even if it absolutely was natural throughout that period, will most likely turn off female audiences (who won't buy the "empowerment" nonsense). Once they cure it in groups, these shows are dead. Will new entertainment leader Bob Greenblatt turn the truly amazing Ship Cinder Block at NBC around? Everybody knows the job before him, and so the bar is rightfully low. I'm predicting he provides much better than expected, though more work awaits. Will Desperate Regular folks day a bang after eight seasons? And, possibly a lot more important, will creator Marc Cherry's decision to shut the lid on round the series be adopted by other showrunners on veteran dramas? Do they really realize that the time has come to move on? Our eyes are saved to Grey's Anatomy, CSI: Anything, regulations & Order franchise and sundry CW shows. Nevermind Kutcher the way in which Ted Danson do on CSI and James Spader round the Office? Guess: Well and not so well. Danson is actually intriguing just like a dramatic actor, something he's been fine-tuning lately. While Spader is capable of doing funny, it might be less about him plus much more about Office just seeming carried out out, no matter who's the boss. What is going to happen to the graduation class of stars on Glee, and may anybody care? Or will there you have to be a spinoff? Or can they all become townies who postpone near to the school? Maybe there's bigger hits in midseason in comparison to fall? There certainly seems being more excitement (especially from experts and, in the event you pressed these to reveal the truth, probably from network professionals) in what's later on in the month of the month of january forward together with your shows as NBC's Smash and Awake and Fox's Alcatraz. Will the programming experiment of the year -- CBS moving the comedy Rules of Engagement to Saturday (yes, Saturday, TV's graveyard) -- reinvigorate the evening for scripted shows? Guess: No. Nevertheless it's a valiant effort. Will people avoid Prime Suspect once they were fans in the original? They shouldn't. It doesn't share any noticeable DNA while using original. Be much more handy familiar trait is always that, inside the pilot, the sexism is colored on pretty thick -- sexism being one of the primary stuff that the first Jane Tennison experienced. Nevertheless the producers have mentioned they'll backtrack on that -- it's a more compact quantity of an problem, while not extinct, in our age. Although it might be just a little disturbing to hear them dismiss the information in the original series as dated, specially when the completely new the very first is really merely a procedural that breaks no ground, there's an very strong reason to check out the completely new version: Maria Bello. Virtually whenever we have seen Jason Statham in anything, we all know he'll be some kind of pleasant bad-ass and can kick the garbage from many people by doing this. This week's "Killer Elite" isn't any exception, as well as much better than Statham illuminating the screen solo, he's became a member of by serious A-listers Robert P Niro and Clive Owen. MTV News swept up using the guy of action lately to go over how his Oscar winning and Oscar nominated co-stars elevated the bar on set. He plays the spy character to some degree that you simply never could - most people I've fight sequences with are stuntmen who are able to barely string a sentence together sometimes," he joked. "It is really an A-list Academy nominated actor that's approaching foot-to-foot. Hes a large guy, hes ferociously intense. We wanted it to feel real. We didnt want some excessively choreographed routine," he described. "We thought about being like two men, one guy trying to get away from this limited space, another attempting to kill him." "It went very well,Inch Statham ongoing. "Its the very first time I've had somebody of this quality to have the ability to do two, three, four times of beating the garbage from one another. Its an excellent scene because nobody wins, there is not a victory available. Its only a real contrasting of missiles." And who does not need to see two missiles, as Statham and Owen, contrasting? TOLDJA! Weinstein Company Announces VOD Label

The Weinstein Company has confirmed Deadline’s scoop about it forming a VOD venture and naming Tom Quinn and Jason Janego to run it. The deal will certainly focus attention on the emergence of VOD as a lifeline to movies that either don’t have the commercial premise or the starpower for a wide theatrical release. Here’s the announcement from TWC: New York (September 6, 2011) The Weinstein Company (TWC) announced today that Tom Quinn and Jason Janego have joined forces with TWC Co-Chairmen Harvey and Bob Weinstein to create a new TWC label to bring new films and other specialty entertainment to audiences simultaneously across multiple digital and traditional platforms. Quinn and Janego will serve as Co-Presidents of the yet-to-be named label, which will be based in New York. The announcement was made by TWC COO David Glasser. Quinn and Janego were among the first in the film industry to explore the potential of emerging digital platforms and were in the vanguard of developing new strategies for alternative distribution during their tenures at Magnolia Pictures, where they were Senior Vice President and Head of Legal & Business Affairs, respectively. In 2005, Magnolia became one of the first distributors to implement the day/date releasing, premiering Steven Soderberghs BUBBLE and Alex Gibneys ENRON: THE SMARTEST GUYS IN THE ROOM simultaneously in select theaters and on DVD. Over the next several years they expanded on the premium VOD/theatrical platform model with such films as James Gray’s TWO LOVERS, Neil Marshall’s CENTURION, Takashi Miike’s 13 ASSASSINS, Alex Gibney’s CLIENT 9 and FREAKONOMICS, the documentary based on the bestseller, enabling these specialty and independent releases to compete alongside studio content. The new label makes TWC the first studio to premiere select titles across multiple platforms via immediate-access digital and traditional media and will bring TWCs unique, high-quality films to larger audiences than ever before. As Co-Presidents, Quinn and Janego will develop content and distribution strategies that move beyond the on-demand model, with a goal of establishing the new label as a marquee destination. Quinn and Janego will oversee acquisitions, productions and distribution of label content. Both will report to Harvey and Bob Weinstein and David Glasser in New York. Quinn and Janego will be on-site at the 2011 Toronto Film Festival to begin scouting titles for the fledgling label. It is anticipated that the label will release its debut title in the first half of 2012. Said Quinn and Janego, Our experience in digital distribution has been eye-opening and inspiring; we see it as a new frontier for studios and for independent filmmakers of every stripe. It makes perfect sense that the godfathers of modern independent cinema, Harvey and Bob Weinstein, would be the first studio chiefs to launch a business dedicated to these new platforms, and we are thrilled to be working alongside them in this new venture. We cant wait to get going. Commented Harvey and Bob Weinstein, Its an exciting time in filmmaking; technology has made film a more democratic medium than ever, for artists and audiences. There are just so many great movies being made all over the world, and the new digital platforms make it possible for more people than ever to see them. We are thrilled about launching this new label with Tom and Jason at the helm: not only are they innovators with a deep understanding of all things digital, theyre two guys who love movies like we do. In a lot of ways, this label is an expansion on the work weve been doing for more than 20 years, and with Tom and Jason aboard we think it will chart a path into the future. Added Glasser, My tenure with TWC has coincided with seismic changes in the cinema landscape, particularly with respect to the digital revolution and the advent of new platforms for watching movies. Our new label represents a forward-thinking approach to an evolving marketplace, and is a natural step for us as a studio built on specialty films. Perhaps most importantly, its a realistic and exciting way to grow TWC as a studio while staying true to the love of film that is so strong in Harvey and Bob, and in our new partners, Tom and Jason. Previously, Quinn spent more than seven years at Magnolia Pictures as SVP and Head of Acquisitions. He created Magnet Releasing, Magnolia’s genre arm, the Six Shooter Series, as well as the annual Oscar Shorts Program. He’s acquired and distributed over 100 films including ONG BAK, MAN ON WIRE, THE HOST, WORLDS FASTEST INDIAN, JESUS CAMP, LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, and WOMAN THOU ART LOOSED. His recent films include: PAGE ONE, MELANCHOLIA, 13 ASSASSINS, HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN, TROLLHUNTER, FREAKONOMICS, CENTURION, I AM LOVE, MONSTERS, and FOOD INC. His productions include: OUTRAGE, COCAINE COWBOYS 2, SPLINTER, and ABC’S OF DEATH. Quinn is also a programmer, having worked for Philadelphia, Atlanta, Woodstock, and ActionFest, a festival he was instrumental in creating. Prior to joining Magnolia, he was at Samuel Goldwyn for seven years, eventually becoming VP of Acquisitions, where he was responsible for acquiring RAISING VICTOR VARGAS and SUPER SIZE ME. Quinn’s first industry job was working in domestic film publicity for Nancy Willen at Dennis Davidson Associates. Prior to joining TWC, Janego had his own consultancy and legal practice focusing on the development of innovative strategies for the production, financing and distribution of content in all areas of the entertainment business. In his career as an executive, lawyer, consultant, and producer’s representative, Janego has been involved with over 250 films. Previously, he was the Chief Operating Officer at Big Beach Films, a New York-based production company whose credits include AWAY WE GO, IS ANYBODY THERE and SUNSHINE CLEANING. Before joining Big Beach, Janego was Head of Business & Legal Affairs for Magnolia Pictures, Magnolia Home Entertainment, and Landmark Theatres, all of which are subsidiaries of the vertically integrated media company Wagner/Cuban Entertainment. Janego has also worked at Miramax Films and with the film sales company Cinetic Media. Earlier in his career, he was employed as an attorney in the legal department of the NBC television network and with Artemis Records. 4 Reasons We're Sweet on Top Chef: Just Desserts Season 2

Top Chef: Just Desserts After a more bitter than sweet first season of Top Chef: Just Desserts, we know we weren't the only ones who were wary of what a second season could bring. Will there be another breakdown-prone Seth? Two more crazy Heathers? Twenty gazillion more buckets of tears? Having seen the premiere (Wednesday, 10/9c, Bravo), we at TVGuide.com are happy to report that the new season is no crybaby-fest redux. So why should you come back for seconds? Here are four reasons:IsTop Chef: Just Dessertson your Watchlist? Add it and your other favorites now and never miss an episode1. The cast seems normal! After last season, the only way the casting directors could go was up, right? The Season 2 cast is still arrogant (what chef isn't?), anal, competitive and catty, but no one is as emotionally fragile, insufferable or malicious as the inaugural crop that spewed homophobic slurs (ahem, Morgan) and was in dire need of anger management. We don't need everyone to be likeable on a reality show - someone's got to fill the villain role (which this season is looking like it's going to Orlando) - but we do need everyone to appear like they passed the entrance psych evaluation. These newbies seem stable and self-aware with a healthy competitive appetite (Chris vs. Orlando!) and a sense of humor. Of Hansel & Gretel - the Elimination Challenge is fairy tale-themed - Rebecca quips, "Although they bake children, so that probably won't be a good dessert." Bottom line: Don't expect another "The Red Hots are for my mommy" implosion.2. The focus is back on the food: Thanks to innumerable fights, mood swings, freak-outs and meltdowns last season, the cheftestants' creations felt like an afterthought to the high-strung drama. Not so here. Everyone gets down to business from the get-go with the Quickfire, in which they have to put a modern spin on a soda fountain-style dessert, and while there are tiffs between team members in the Elimination Challenge, they all blow over quickly and everyone gets back to the task at hand. Why Top Chef: Just Desserts was a bittersweet pill: producers on the problem with pastry 3. Bring on the recipes! The source of some of the freak-outs last year: Cheftestants could not bring recipes. It was a ballsy move since pastry is a finely measured and precise craft. The results weren't terrible by any means, but producers - maybe fearing more hissy fits - have dropped the ban this go-around. Good call - no one can complain and it can all be about execution now. Our one hope: Don't give them more time or make the challenges less demanding. A competitive reality show, especially a cooking one, is about being out of your element, adapting to the twists and thinking on your feet - not just how well you can whip up a dish.4. Hair today, gone tomorrow: OK, it's not totally gone, but head judge Johnny Iuzzini's distracting towering, over-gelled Elvis-esque bouffant has been trimmed and relaxed. Now we can really concentrate on the sweets!Watch an exclusive clip from the season premiere:
